Midtown or Times Square? How to Pick Your First NYC Hotel

Ask ten first-timers where they are staying. Five say Midtown. Five say Times Square. The two areas sit close together, but after dark the feel is very different.

Quick answer

Midtown or Times Square for your first NYC hotel? Want a polished, central base that is usually quieter at night? Pick the quieter parts of Midtown. Here for Broadway and fine with noise? Pick Times Square.

What Midtown feels like

Midtown is the New York you picture. Skyscrapers. Fifth Avenue windows. Rockefeller Center. The big luxury hotels. It is also the most central spot in town. Central Park sits north. Times Square is west. Grand Central is east.

Weekdays get busy, with offices filling the avenues. Weekend mornings can feel calmer. Evenings buzz around Rockefeller Center and the theaters, but usually less than Times Square. For plenty of people, that is the sweet spot. Close to everything. Still sleepable.

Want to walk to the classic sights? Look at hotels between 50th and 59th Streets, and check each address. Rockefeller Center, 5 Av/53 St and Grand Central each have plenty of subway lines close by.

What Times Square feels like

Times Square is the heart of the Theater District. Many Broadway theaters are within a few blocks. Step out, catch a show, walk home. It never stops. Neon, crowds, nonstop motion.

Quiet it is not. Practical it is. The Times Sq-42 St subway hub and Port Authority are right there. Penn Station and Bryant Park are walkable. Restaurants stay open late.

Sleep matters? Ask for a high floor, or a room facing away from the avenues. Then walk a few blocks west into Hell’s Kitchen, where the restaurants and bars are ones locals actually use.

Hotels worth a look

Midtown has The St. Regis New York, The Peninsula, Lotte New York Palace, New York Hilton Midtown and Waldorf Astoria New York. The Plaza sits at the top of Fifth Avenue by Central Park.

Times Square itself has the New York Marriott Marquis and The Knickerbocker. The Algonquin sits in the Theater District, a short walk away.

Our NYC hotels map shows all of them side by side. For more on each area, read the Midtown and Fifth Avenue guide and the Times Square and Theater District guide.

Midtown or Times Square: how to choose

Choose Midtown if:

  • you want a polished base near Central Park, Rockefeller Center and Fifth Avenue
  • you want a calmer evening and better sleep
  • you are shopping or here for work

Choose Times Square if:

  • Broadway is why you came
  • you want theaters, the subway hub and late food within a few blocks

Need a tie-breaker? Count your evenings. More than half around a show? Stay in Times Square. Rather spend them on dinner and a walk? Midtown wins.

Midtown Manhattan vs. Times Square: Choosing the Best Hotels in New York City

For first-time visitors to the Big Apple, deciding between broader Midtown Manhattan and the bright lights of Times Square shapes your entire New York City experience. Staying right in Times Square and the Theater District places your hotel steps from Broadway curtain calls, late-night dining, and major subway junctions, making it ideal for travelers who want nonstop energy outside their rooms. By contrast, choosing a luxury hotel or quiet boutique hotel a few avenues east near Fifth Avenue, Rockefeller Center, or Bryant Park gives guests calmer tree-lined side streets while remaining within walking distance of the same top attractions.

Walking Distance to Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue, and the Theater District

Across Midtown in New York, the best hotels cater to both leisure visitors and corporate guests arriving via Grand Central Terminal or Penn Station from across New York State. Within a fifteen-minute stroll from Midtown Manhattan, you can visit the Empire State Building to the south, browse flagship shops along Fifth Avenue, or walk north to the southern gates of Central Park.

How Guests Compare Luxury Hotel Rooms, Breakfast Perks, and New York State Transit

When comparing hotels in Manhattan, check room square footage, window soundproofing on lower floors, and whether your rate includes daily breakfast credits. Many upscale Midtown hotels offer quieter weekend rates when business travel pauses, giving first-time New York guests more space and better value just blocks from Times Square.

Travelers who compare weekday corporate rates against weekend leisure pricing across Midtown Manhattan, Chelsea, SoHo, and the Upper West Side routinely save fifteen to twenty-five percent on comparable four-star rooms.

If your flight or train arrives hours before standard three o-clock check-in, nearly every full-service New York hotel bell desk will store your bags free of charge so you can start exploring Central Park, Fifth Avenue, or the High Line right away.

For families and small groups sharing a room, requesting a higher floor away from street-facing elevators and confirming whether two queen beds or a sofa sleeper are guaranteed in writing prevents surprises at the front desk.

Using contactless OMNY tap-to-pay at subway turnstiles and crosstown buses also caps your weekly transit spend automatically, making it simple to ride between Uptown museums, Broadway theaters, and Brooklyn waterfront parks without buying paper farecards.

Whether you are visiting New York City for a quick forty-eight-hour weekend getaway or a full week of sightseeing, balancing iconic observation decks and Broadway shows with unhurried neighborhood walks through Greenwich Village, the West Village, and DUMBO creates a memorable trip.
