Famous TV Places in NYC: How to Get Tickets to SNL, Fallon and More

Some of the most famous TV places in NYC are studios you can sit inside. Here are two photos from my own visits: waiting to go into a taping of the David Letterman show, and the stage at Saturday Night Live.

Quick answer

Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show and Late Night with Seth Meyers all tape at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, and tickets are free. Rules change, so check NBC before you go. The Late Show, famous for David Letterman, ended in May 2026.

The Ed Sullivan Theater on Broadway

The Ed Sullivan Theater is at 1697 Broadway. For more than 30 years it was known as the home of The Late Show, first with David Letterman and then with Stephen Colbert.

Colbert’s final episode aired on May 21, 2026, so you can no longer attend a Late Show taping there. The building is still worth a look from the sidewalk if you are near Times Square.

Saturday Night Live at 30 Rockefeller Plaza

Saturday Night Live tapes at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, at Rockefeller Center in Midtown. Official tickets are free, so do not buy them from resellers.

  • The lottery: NBC has run an email lottery in August for the season. Check the current dates. You send one email with your name and a short note, and entries sent outside the window are disqualified. Winners get a seat for a dress rehearsal or the live show.
  • The standby line: standby rules change, so follow NBC’s current instructions. A standby card does not guarantee entry.
  • The rules: there is usually an age minimum, and everyone in your party needs a valid photo ID. Check NBC’s current rules.

Rules and dates change from season to season, so check NBC’s official SNL page before you plan around them.

The Tonight Show and Late Night

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers both tape at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Tickets are free, but they are never a sure thing.

  • The Tonight Show: the main way in is the official 1iota ticket lottery. You set up a free profile and request the dates you want.
  • Late Night: you can request tickets online, and standby may be offered on the day. Check NBC’s current instructions.
  • The rules: there is usually an age minimum, and you need a valid ID. Shows can be overbooked, so a reservation may not guarantee admission.

Where to stay near Rockefeller Center

A hotel close to 30 Rockefeller Plaza makes early lines and late tapings easier. The Peninsula New York is a Fifth Avenue landmark steps from Rockefeller Center. New York Hilton Midtown is a large, dependable hotel nearby too. The St. Regis New York is a block from the Fifth Avenue flagships.

Tips for visiting famous TV places in NYC

  • Treat a taping as a bonus, not the whole plan. Shows overbook, and standby is never certain.
  • Bring a government photo ID for everyone in your group.
  • Be flexible with dates, and request as many as the system allows.
  • Never pay a third party for tickets.

How the SNL Ticket Lottery, Friday Night Standby Line, and Dress Rehearsal Work at NBC Studios

For television fans hoping to attend SNL at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, understanding both the annual SNL ticket lottery and the weekly standby line is essential. Every August, NBC Studios opens the Saturday Night Live lottery via email, allowing fans to request free tickets for an upcoming Saturday night during the season. Because demand for SNL tickets far exceeds Studio 8H seating capacity, most visitors flying into New York rely on the official SNL standby line process instead.

Entering the Saturday Night Live Lottery vs. the SNL Standby Line Process

To join the standby line, you first reserve a numbered spot online on Thursday morning and then report to the in person standby line outside 30 Rock on Friday night between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., where NBC staff verify every guest’s valid photo ID before handing out numbered SNL standby tickets at 12:01 a.m. When claiming your card in the SNL standby line, you must choose between the 8:00 p.m. dress rehearsal and the 11:30 p.m. Saturday Night Live broadcast.

Choosing Between the Live Broadcast and Dress Rehearsal for Saturday Night Live

Experienced SNL audience members often recommend picking the dress rehearsal: it runs thirty minutes longer than the live late night show, features the exact same host, musical guest, and cast members, and includes several extra sketches that get cut before air. Keep in mind that standby tickets do not guarantee admission, wait-list audience members are seated just before taping begins on Saturday night, and staying at a Midtown hotel within five blocks of Rockefeller Center makes the late Friday night wait effortless.

Travelers who compare weekday corporate rates against weekend leisure pricing across Midtown Manhattan, Chelsea, SoHo, and the Upper West Side routinely save fifteen to twenty-five percent on comparable four-star rooms. Comparing weekday and weekend.
