Quick answer

The two big Midtown East hotels are Waldorf Astoria New York, an Art Deco landmark on Park Avenue, and Lotte New York Palace, behind the Villard Houses across from St. Patrick’s Cathedral. For the shortest walk to the trains, look at The Westin New York Grand Central or the Library Hotel.

Why Midtown East hotels work

Midtown is the most central place to stay in New York. Central Park is to the north, Times Square to the west and Grand Central to the east. The east side gives you the train hub, and many subway lines stop at Grand Central.

Grand Central handles Metro-North and the subway. Long Island Rail Road trains use Grand Central Madison, below it. Going to Yankee Stadium? Metro-North’s Hudson Line runs from Grand Central to Yankees-East 153rd Street in about 15 minutes. See our Yankees fan guide.

Hotels near Grand Central Station by walking distance

Want to roll your bag off a Metro-North train and be in your room fast? These hotels near Grand Central Station are all open and a short walk from the main concourse.

Two big names you may still see online are gone. The Grand Hyatt next door and the Roosevelt on Madison Avenue have both closed. Here is what is open now, from closest to farthest.

  • The Westin New York Grand Central, 212 East 42nd Street. About two blocks east of the terminal. Good for business travelers and anyone with an early train.
  • Library Hotel, 299 Madison Avenue at 41st Street. About two blocks west. A small, quiet hotel with a book theme on every floor. Suits couples and readers who want calm over a big lobby.
  • Andaz 5th Avenue, 485 Fifth Avenue at 41st Street. Roughly a five-minute walk west, across from the New York Public Library and Bryant Park. Suits design fans who want Fifth Avenue at the door.
  • Pod 39, 145 East 39th Street. About a five to seven minute walk south into Murray Hill. Compact rooms and a rooftop bar. Suits solo travelers and anyone watching their budget.
  • InterContinental New York Barclay, 111 East 48th Street. About five blocks north, near Park Avenue. A classic full-service hotel for families and longer stays.

Walking times are rough and depend on which terminal exit you use. The Lexington Avenue and 42nd Street exits are best for the Westin and Pod 39. The Vanderbilt Avenue side is quicker for the Library Hotel and Andaz. If you are taking the 4, 5, 6, 7 or S train, all of these are an easy walk from the Grand Central subway station too. For a tour of the terminal itself, see our Grand Central Terminal guide.

Book early for weekdays. This part of Midtown fills with business travelers Monday to Thursday, and weekends are often easier. Before you book, check whether the hotel adds a daily facility or destination fee.
