A Beach Day From NYC: Jones Beach and Robert Moses State Park

I grew up going to Jones Beach and Robert Moses, and I went to camp at the beach when I was in elementary school. If your New York trip falls in summer, a beach day from NYC at one of these two Long Island parks is worth it.

Quick answer

Jones Beach, in Wantagh, is the classic boardwalk beach on Long Island’s south shore. Robert Moses State Park sits at the western end of Fire Island. You can reach Robert Moses by train and bus in season, so check the schedules. Both are state parks, and both make a good beach day from NYC.

Both parks are tied to Robert Moses. He led the Long Island State Park Commission and planned Jones Beach as the centerpiece of a wider network of parks and parkways.

Jones Beach opened in 1929. Building it meant dredging sand to create the island and building causeways to the mainland. Robert Moses State Park carries his name too. Its history as a state park goes back to 1908.

Jones Beach State Park

Jones Beach sits on a barrier island off Long Island’s south shore, in Wantagh. Several parkways lead to it. It has a boardwalk, two large bathhouses and a central water tower. Check which pools are open before you go.

The park also has ball fields, courts and an amphitheater. Check the park’s site for what is open on your dates.

Robert Moses State Park

Robert Moses State Park is at the western end of Fire Island, in southern Suffolk County. You reach it from Long Island by the Robert Moses Causeway across Great South Bay.

The park has about five miles of Atlantic shoreline with four lifeguarded beaches. There are fishing piers and an 18-hole pitch-and-putt course that runs in season. The Fire Island Lighthouse stands just east of the park.

Getting there for a beach day from NYC

For Robert Moses, you may not need a car, but service is seasonal. Take the Long Island Rail Road’s Babylon Branch to Babylon station. Then take the Suffolk County bus that runs in season. Check the current schedule and route number on the MTA website or the TrainTime app before you go.

Long Island Rail Road trains arrive in Manhattan at Penn Station, so a hotel nearby makes the early start easy. See our guide to staying near Penn Station or the Chelsea, Flatiron and Penn Station area.

A beach day and a city stay

Plenty of visitors treat New York as a city-only trip. A beach day changes the shape of a week. Keep a couple of nights in Manhattan for shows and sightseeing, then spend one day out on the sand.

How to Plan A Beach Day From NYC: Rates, Subway Access, and Seasonal Timing

When researching robert moses jones beach and planning around A Beach Day From NYC, comparing block-by-block walkability, express subway connections, and seasonal rate shifts helps you get the most out of every day in New York City. Across Midtown & Fifth Avenue and neighboring Manhattan and Brooklyn corridors, nightly hotel prices and ticket demand fluctuate with Broadway schedules, midweek corporate conventions at the Javits Center, and holiday travel peaks. Reviewing our NYC hotel prices by month guide alongside our where to stay in NYC neighborhood breakdown makes it easy to spot high-value travel weeks before you lock in your itinerary.

Comparing Neighborhood Walkability and Express Transit Around A Beach Day From NYC

Transit proximity matters just as much as the nightly room rate when moving between Midtown landmarks, museum mornings near Central Park, and evening dinner reservations in Downtown Manhattan. Choosing a hotel within a five-to-eight-minute walk of an express subway stationβ€”such as the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, A, C, E, B, D, F, M, or N, Q, R, W linesβ€”saves both commute time and taxi fares. Travelers arriving via JFK Airport, LaGuardia Airport, or Newark Liberty International Airport should also check how directly their route connects to New York Penn Station, Moynihan Train Hall, or Grand Central Terminal when carrying luggage.

Booking Windows, Refundable Room Rates, and Total Stay Value in New York City

Before finalizing any reservation in New York, always inspect the all-in nightly price including New York City hotel occupancy taxes and any mandatory property or destination fees. Booking a flexible, refundable rate 30 to 45 days ahead lets you secure a proven room in a prime location and re-check live inventory two weeks before check-in if unsold Manhattan rooms drop in price. Pairing smart neighborhood selection with early morning arrival times ensures a smooth, stress-free New York City experience in every season.

Travelers who compare weekday corporate rates against weekend leisure pricing across Midtown Manhattan, Chelsea, SoHo, and the Upper West Side routinely save fifteen to twenty-five percent on comparable four-star rooms.

If your flight or train arrives hours before standard three o-clock check-in, nearly every full-service New York hotel bell desk will store your bags free of charge so you can start exploring Central Park, Fifth Avenue, or the High Line right away.

For families and small groups sharing a room, requesting a higher floor away from street-facing elevators and confirming whether two queen beds or a sofa sleeper are guaranteed.
