Hotels Near Madison Square Garden (MSG): Game Night Stays

The Garden is built right on top of Penn Station. So the best hotels near Madison Square Garden are the ones you can walk to. Here is how to pick, what the walk really looks like and how to dodge the post-show crush.

Quick answer

Stay in the West 30s. Ten minutes on foot is the limit. Look at the event calendar first, because prices jump on game and concert nights. Book early, and ask for a higher floor.

Where the Garden is

The address is 4 Pennsylvania Plaza. It sits over Penn Station, from 31st to 33rd Street, between Seventh and Eighth Avenues.

The Knicks and Rangers play here. So do the big concerts. That is why hotels near the Garden fill up fast.

How far is close enough?

Under five minutes is the dream. That means 33rd to 35th Street, on either side of Seventh Avenue.

Ten minutes still works, and it opens up more rooms. Think Herald Square to the east or the Chelsea blocks to the south.

Walk it on a map first. A hotel that says β€œnear MSG” might mean a block and a half or a long half mile.

Subway lines that help

Two stations sit under Penn Station. The 1, 2 and 3 run on Seventh Avenue. The A, C and E run on Eighth.

Herald Square at 34th Street adds the B, D, F, M, N, Q, R and W. So even a hotel a few blocks away has an easy ride home after the show.

Hotels near Madison Square Garden: how to choose

West of Eighth Avenue puts you by Moynihan Train Hall. Handy if you came in on Amtrak or the Long Island Rail Road.

East of Seventh Avenue puts you near Herald Square, Macy’s and Koreatown on 32nd Street. Great for dinner before the game. Louder at night.

South toward Chelsea is calmer. See our Chelsea and Penn Station guide.

One hotel stands out for history: The New Yorker, on Eighth Avenue at 34th Street, opened in 1930. It is a short walk to the Garden. Read more in our historic hotels guide.

Game and concert nights

Doors usually open an hour or so before the event. Plan to eat early.

Games are shorter and start at a set time. Concerts can stretch late. Either way, thousands of people leave at once.

Skip the taxi line. Walk a few blocks away from the Garden before you hail a ride, or just walk back to your hotel. That is the best reason to stay close. Look at the Garden calendar before you pick dates.

Food before and after the show

Koreatown is a short walk east, with barbecue and late-night spots. Herald Square has fast options. Penn Station has a food hall for a quick bite. Check hours, because places change.

Need a train in the morning? Penn Station is right there. Our hotels near Penn Station page covers the train side.

Save money and book

Stay a few blocks from the Garden, not on top of it. A ten-minute walk can lower the rate. Book early, and pick free cancellation.

Check live prices on the hotel search page, build your days with the trip planner and find a table on the food map.
