🚶 How to take this tour

Just keep scrolling. You’ll walk through my stay in order, from the cab door to check-out. Jump to any stop:

The Plaza Hotel entrance with its iron canopy and red-carpet steps, a yellow cab passing
Stop 01 · 3:02 PM

The arrival

The cab pulls up, a doorman already has your door, and you walk up red-carpet steps under that black-and-gold iron canopy. I live twenty minutes away and it still gives me a little thrill. This is the New York people picture before they ever land.

InsiderThis photo is from a snowy January visit. In October the park across the street was turning gold, which is even better.

A grand marble hotel lobby with a crystal chandelier and fresh flowers
Stop 02 · 3:05 PM

The lobby

Marble underfoot, a chandelier the size of a small car, and flowers that look like they were arranged an hour ago. Check-in took eight minutes. Nobody rushed me, and nobody made me feel like I was in the wrong place in sneakers.

InsiderAsk at the desk if a higher park-view floor has opened up. It costs nothing to ask, and it worked for me.

The Plaza elevator landing on the 16th floor with gold carpet, candle sconces and a vintage phone
Stop 03 · 3:14 PM

Up to sixteen

The elevator opens onto gold rose carpet, candle sconces, an oil portrait and a black rotary phone on a gilded side table. It feels less like a hotel hallway and more like walking into someone’s very fancy apartment building in 1925.

InsiderThe hallways are wonderfully quiet. Rooms near the elevator were still silent at night.

Opening a tall paneled hotel room door onto a light-filled room
Stop 04 · 3:16 PM

Key in the door

Tall paneled door, little brass number, and then that first slice of daylight from the windows. This is the moment I film for every stay, because it’s the moment you’ll remember.

An Edwardian-style king bedroom with a chandelier and windows over Central Park
Stop 05 · 3:17 PM

The room

Edwardian Park View King: a tufted headboard, a crystal chandelier, Louis-style armchairs and silk curtains framing Central Park. It’s grand and traditional. Expect gold leaf, not minimalism, and honestly that’s the point.

InsiderThe bed is high and plush. I counted six pillows, and housekeeping brought a firmer one in five minutes.

A marble hotel bathroom with a soaking tub and gold fixtures
Stop 06 · 3:25 PM

The gold bathroom

Yes, the faucets really are gold. Marble everywhere, a mosaic floor, a deep tub and towels so thick they barely fold. Water pressure was strong and the hot water was instant, which matters more than the gold.

InsiderRun the bath before tea and it’s the perfect temperature when you get back.

Looking out a hotel window over Central Park in autumn colors
Stop 07 · 3:40 PM

Open the curtains

This is the reason to book. Central Park, wall to wall, the treetops going orange and gold, the skyline lined up behind it. I stood at the window longer than I’d like to admit. You can’t get this from an apartment, not even mine.

InsiderPay for the park view or don’t bother. A courtyard room here misses the whole point.

Afternoon tea under a stained-glass ceiling with a three-tier silver stand
Stop 08 · 4:30 PM

Tea under the glass

Downstairs for afternoon tea under the stained-glass ceiling: warm scones, tiny sandwiches, a silver tower of pastries and a pot of tea that kept getting refilled without asking. It’s pure theater, and I mean that as a compliment.

InsiderBook tea when you book the room. Weekend afternoons fill up weeks ahead.

A candle-lit luxury spa room with marble and orchids
Stop 09 · 6:00 PM

Spa, gym & extras

🪖 Spa🏋️ Fitness center🍽️ Food Hall downstairs🛎️ 24-hour room service🧥 Robes & slippers

I spent an hour at the spa before dinner. Calm, dim, candle-lit and spotless. The gym is small but has everything you need for a quick morning session.

InsiderThe Food Hall downstairs is the budget secret: great snacks without room-service prices.

The hotel room at night after turndown with the Manhattan skyline glittering outside
Stop 10 · 11:30 PM

Lights out

Came back to turndown: lamps on, bed folded back, a chocolate on the pillow and the skyline glittering through the curtains. I slept a solid eight hours. I heard one siren all night, and that’s a win for Fifth Avenue.

SleepBed 9/10 · Quiet 8/10 · Blackout 8/10 (a thin gap of light at the curtain edge)

A room-service breakfast table by the window in morning light
Stop 11 · 7:45 AM

Breakfast with the park

Room service at the window: silver coffee pot, warm croissants, berries and fresh juice, with joggers looping the park below. It arrived five minutes early. This is the photo everyone asks me about.

InsiderOrder breakfast the night before with the door-hanger card and pick the earliest slot. The light is best before nine.

Bethesda Terrace and the lake in Central Park with the skyline behind
Stop 12 · 11:40 AM

Check-out & one last walk

Check-out took two minutes, and they held my bag so I could walk straight into the park. Ten minutes later I was at Bethesda Terrace. That’s the real luxury of this address: New York starts at the front door.

The honest part

My verdict

An iconic New York experience that still feels truly magical at every turn.

There is no address in New York quite like this one. Walking past the doormen and into that lobby still gives me a little thrill, and I live here.

The park-view room is the reason to book. Waking up to Central Park outside the window is a memory, not just a hotel night. The bathroom is pure old-school glamour, the bed is excellent, and the service is polished without being stiff.

It is grand and traditional, so expect gold leaf rather than minimalism. Some corners show their age, and the cheapest rooms skip the view that makes this place special. If you’re going to do The Plaza, do it properly: park view, tea booked, and nowhere to be until noon.

💚 What I loved
  • Central Park from the window
  • Unbeatable location
  • The gold-and-marble bathroom
  • Afternoon tea under the glass ceiling
  • Feels like a once-in-a-lifetime night
👀 Could be better
  • Pricey for the smaller, non-view rooms
  • Lobby can feel touristy in the afternoon
  • A little light leaks past the blackout curtains
Book it ifIt’s a bucket-list trip, a proposal, a big birthday, or your first time in New York and you want THE hotel.
Skip it ifYou prefer sleek, modern design, or you’d rather spend the money on shows and dinners.
🎟️
Not booking it this trip? You just toured it.

That’s the point of the Hotel Insider. Now you know exactly what the room, the view and the night feel like. Have tea downstairs or browse the Food Hall for a taste without the room rate.

Who’s behind the reviews Matthew S. Crawford

Founder of NYCHotelss.com. Matthew registered californiahotels.com in 1998, built a portfolio of state hotel sites including Virginia, Arizona and Colorado, and sold the group to First Internet Travel, Inc. in 2005. He has lived in Dubai for five years and Maui for two, traveled to more than 40 countries, and stayed in the Presidential Suite at the Burj Al Arab in Dubai (featured in Suites & Villas: The $25,000-a-Night Burj Al Arab Presidential Suite Tour →). So when he calls a hotel world-class, he has something to compare it to.

“Visitors have always wanted the same thing: an answer they can trust. When we can’t find one, we’d rather say we don’t know yet than guess.” The same rule applies to every hotel review.

⚖️ The honest-review promise

  • An invitation is never a guaranteed or guaranteed-positive review.
  • No hotel sees or edits a review before it publishes.
  • Hosted stays are always clearly disclosed at the top.
  • Every review lists what I loved and what could be better. That honesty is exactly why readers trust the good parts.

Before Hotels.com Existed, Matthew S. Crawford Built CaliforniaHotels.com (Jan 10, 1998), NewJerseyHotels.com, VirginiaHotels.com, VermontHotels.com & HawaiiLuxuryHotels.com

Having worked inside hotels firsthand and built hospitality businesses from the ground up since 1998, Founder & Editor-in-Chief Matthew S. Crawford started out in his car driving door-to-door and ringing doorbells at bed-and-breakfasts and hotels to sign them onto his very first travel website, NewJerseyHotels.com—before Hotels.com was even around. On January 10, 1998, he became the first person in history to register and personally design CaliforniaHotels.com under his company MSCrawford Group, Inc.. One of the original 1998 dot-com hospitality pioneers still standing strong nearly three decades later without missing a beat, he built and exited his state hotel domain conglomerate—including CaliforniaHotels.com, NewJerseyHotels.com, VirginiaHotels.com, VermontHotels.com, and several others to name a few—to First Internet Travel, which subsequently sold the portfolio to hospitality giant Cendant Corporation (Crawford remains tight-lipped on the actual contract and what was negotiated, as the purchase is governed under a strict Non-Disclosure Agreement). Through the deal, he kept his prized 1998 crown-jewel domain, HawaiiLuxuryHotels.com—for which a brand-new luxury flagship platform is being built as we speak (look forward to the all-new HawaiiLuxuryHotels.com launching next!). Today, having evolved MSCrawford Group into Design Kreatives Group LLC and acquired global SEO, AEO & GEO agency DesignKreatives.com, Matthew brings 28+ years of hotel industry grit and 40+ countries of firsthand world travel to NYCHotelss.com.

NEW YORK, NY — When travelers search for a hotel in Manhattan today, they are met with a familiar digital wall: 800 generic listings, identical stock photography, sponsored placements bidding for the top of the screen, and undisclosed destination fees that can tack on $85 a night at checkout. NYCHotelss.com, an independent hospitality platform headquartered at New York & Atlanta, is taking an entirely different approach.

Founded by 1998 dot-com hospitality pioneer and luxury travel specialist Matthew S. Crawford—who worked in hotels firsthand, drove in his car ringing doorbells at bed-and-breakfasts for NewJerseyHotels.com, registered and built CaliforniaHotels.com on January 10, 1998 before Hotels.com existed, exited his state hotel domain conglomerate (California, New Jersey, Virginia, Vermont, and several others to name a few) to First Internet Travel / Cendant under a confidential Non-Disclosure Agreement while keeping his prized 1998 crown-jewel domain HawaiiLuxuryHotels.com (with a brand-new luxury site currently being built as we speak), and has traveled firsthand to 40+ countries—the platform combines high-end insider curation with an uncompromising commitment to consumer value across 500+ dedicated, hand-built guides.

“Today’s travel engines give you 800 hotel options with identical stock photos and no soul. At NYCHotelss.com, the last ‘S’ stands for savings, and the curation is pure luxury. We built over 500 comprehensive guides so travelers know the exact room with the Central Park view, the quiet block in the Theater District, and where to grab an authentic slice at midnight after a Broadway show.” — Matthew S. Crawford, Founder & Editor-in-Chief, NYCHotelss.com & DesignKreatives.com
